Young Lighthouse Program Students First in Minnesota Stock Market Game
Jan. 15, 2010
Spring Lake Park, MN
Students from the district’s Lighthouse Program placed first in the state in the Stock Market Game.

The annual competition gives students a virtual $100,000 to invest in the stock market and learn about the economy firsthand on a local, national, and even global scale. Over 13,000 Minnesotans participate annually.

Outperforming 110 other teams and placing first in the grades 4-6 division were Isabella Tsiknas, grade 1, , Emma Butzer, grade 5, Joseph Williams, grade 5, and Charles Baker (who has since transferred).

According to the young and savvy investors, Isabella, Emma, and Joseph suggested the companies to purchase while Charles did the purchasing and selling. Verizon Wireless and Google were among the team’s purchases.

Though they met occasionally to check their progress, after making their purchases, the team watched their “company” rise to success. "Our strategy was to buy our stocks and then just leave them alone," said Charles Baker.

The strategy worked.

By early December, they had reached second place in the Stock Market Game. Four weeks later, they moved into first place with a total of $109,677.83, for a  profit of $9,677.83.

An award ceremony for the team will be held January 20 at The Carlson School of Management on the University of Minnesota Campus.
