Choir - Audition Requirements

Spring Lake Park Choir Requirements, Audition and Placement Policy
Placing people in the appropriate choir is a important component to a student’s success. If they are placed in a choir that is too advanced for their abilities it will be difficult, if not impossible, to keep up. If the student is placed in a choir that’s too easy, then they won’t feel challenged. The goal is always to find the right place for the student, where they will be challenged, but not overwhelmed. The goal is also for students to accept the choir they are assigned and continue to mature, grow musically and find belonging in our choir program.

Varsity Chorus Requirements
Acceptance in the Varsity Chorus is by Middle school teacher recommendation or by vocal evaluation by the High School Director. Matching pitch, singing a simple melody and a history of acceptable behavior are the main qualifiers.

Park Singers Requirements
As a student makes efforts to participate in advanced choirs auditions/evaluations of various levels of skill are used. The Park Singers is a mid-level choir that may be a mixed or single gender choir depending on scheduling and availability of students. They sing medium difficulty music in 2-8 parts. Vocal Evaluations for the following year’s choirs begin in January. Below are the qualities that are evaluated in consideration for placement in The Park Singers
  1. Vocal Skill and Development - What is the skill and development in terms of range, tone quality, breath control, vocal intonation and the ability to learn and read music quickly.
  2. Level of Commitment - What is the ability and level of commitment to hard work?
  3. Musical and Vocal Experience - Has there been private voice study? (or other instruments)? What choirs have been sung in previously?
